Year 9 Options
At St Ambrose Barlow we are committed to providing an excellent and inclusive Catholic education for all our pupils. We recognise that all our students are unique and possess different talents, abilities and aspirations. We aim to cater for all these differences, ensuring that all our pupils are given the best possible education that will not only stretch and challenge them but also ensure that they will be prepared for their next stage in life.

In Year 9 pupils will have the opportunity to consider carefully which subjects they will study in KS4. All pupils will study a strong academic combination of subjects at GCSE.

Compulsory GCSE subjects for all pupils are:
RE
English Literature
English Language
Mathematics
Science
History OR Geography

*All pupils will continue with their education in PSHE, RSE and CIAG and take part in core PE.

Pupils can then choose 2 other subjects from the options booklet.

Ebacc

The current English Baccalaureate is not a qualification itself, but a particular group of GCSE subjects that are usually looked on favourably by Universities, as they indicate that a pupil has achieved a strong, broad and balanced academic foundation.

The government’s ambition is to see 75% of pupils studying the EBacc subject combination at GCSE by 2022, and 90% by 2025.

We encourage as many of our pupils as possible to follow the Ebacc pathway and to continue studying Spanish.
